Throughout her artistic output, Belgian artist Arpaïs Du Bois has been distilling elements from the world into two intricate systems: one of visual symbols and another of written text. The two systems weave, overlap and separate in a fluid interplay, as words evoke shapes and colors, and shapes and colors call to mind words. The interchangeability of the two systems is particularly poignant given the confusion and uncertainty that have ruled the pandemic. The title of the work, ‘to numb the future’ (as opposed to ‘the future is numb’) activates the viewers into response mode, reacting to the current events with a wish to control what lies ahead. The bulbous forms—reminiscent of human organs as they are of unformed thoughts—are contained by elegant pink arcs that appear to attempt containing them. Subsequently, Engourdir le futur heightens our awareness of the new reality and our longing to exercise control over our future.
