In discussing how his paintings come about, Kris Lewis states, “As I begin a painting the subject physically, emotionally and spiritually reveals itself to me. Each brush stroke speaks to the subsequent stroke, carrying out a dialog, linking my subject and me as if we were meeting for the first time." In 'Starla', the dialogue between the artist and the subject appears to gradually unfold, with the artist leaving 'clues' around the subject to suggest the potential context for their encounter. Based on multiple models whom the artist worked with in chiseling the final subject, Starla is a fully-formed character with a life, a history and compassion that the artist successfully conveys to his viewers. As seductive as it is endearing, the painting offers a glimpse of the artist's preferred approach, stating: "I find this uncertainty exciting and embrace the indecisive nature of my work.”
