Alicia Adamerovich's artworks do not often start with preparatory sketches or specific ideas. Rather, the artist is inspired by forms, and lets the artwork reveal itself as she begins to work the surface--be it canvas or a work on paper. For her, artwork is a means "to express emotion through shape." By treating her surface organically and candidly, Adamerovich, who is currently on residency in Brescia, Italy, is able to conjure her most personal journeys and give them shape, form, light and color through her practice. The title of this artwork is derived from the artist's personal interactions with her therapist over the past year, during which she came to understand herself more fully, especially in the way she is perceived by others, and its impact on her well-being. Like a diary page, 'When you talk down to me I know I'm beautiful', acts as a stepping stone in a most unexpected year of challenging setbacks and exciting growth opportunities.
