New York based artist Paul Branca pays homage to his Italian heritage in 'Il Minestrone', a diptych whose title resonates with the iconic comedy from 1981. In the film, a small group of charming and destitute men roam around in search of the perfect meal--without having to pay. Bolting from restaurants and taverns before paying, the men spend the movie escaping the law while in search of their next meal. In Branca's painting, a seemingly haphazard yet enticing assemblage of sausage links, artist's palettes, architectural elements, colorful planes and body parts populate the scene and form an unexpectedly cohesive Surrealist scene, capturing the fantastical, escapist tableau the Il Minestrone protagonists likely envisioned for themselves.
