Italian-born, Berlin-based artist Mimmo Catania deftly reduces his scenes--be it a burning car, an eerie classroom, or a somewhat unsettling living room--into a minimalist palette. The balance between the stark palette and the detailed, complex narrative engenders a sense of cinematic unease that continuously informs the artist's work. In 'Reunion', a seemingly benign scene of a mother surrounded by her three children, is punctured by the bright-white void emanating from the 1950s Television set. Furniture appears to dissolve into the walls, an curtain hangs outside the room, and the scene is sliced by the intrusion of a wall that leads viewers' eyes to a Post-War AbEx painting that seems incongruent with the room. Indeed, the longer viewers spend with the painting, the more unclear the scene becomes, raising more questions than answers.
